…Yet, despite, all the problems and challenges, I felt I could make a difference, and I really and truly wanted to make a difference.
You see there were many jobseekers who were actively looking for a job, who wanted to work, wanted to better themselves, wanted to have a career, wanted an improved standard of living, wanted their independence, and wanted
to regain some form of dignity as opposed to having to go cap in hand for benefits,
But the system, the system made it nigh impossible for them to break free from the benefits trap they found themselves in.

Have you ever felt that way, that you could improve your lot in life, if only you were given the opportunity to do so?
Seeing as I couldn’t understand how training jobseekers to effectively decorate a lorry as a carnival float, would lead to them ever finding employment, I devised and built my own recruitment consultants training programme
that I thought had a lot more merit.
I even wrote two books to help these jobseekers one was entitled “how to find your perfect job, in 30 days or less,” and the other one was “start a career in recruitment, within a few short
weeks.”
My idea was for me to train a group of the unemployed to become recruitment consultants, giving some the opportunity to move to a career in recruitment that would pay them a decent salary and of course move them off
benefits.
And so, I sent my proposal along with my ‘start a career in recruitment book’, plus an in-depth training programme to one of the Project Directors of the New Deal
programme.
My proposal to him was, rather than transferring recruitment consultants from Reed to work at the job centre, I would like to train a team of jobseekers, to become recruitment
consultants.
The intention was to train some of the unemployed with the goal of getting them to become good at finding jobs and placing candidates, to the point that they would be skilled enough to be taken on by Reed as recruitment
consultants.
To me, this was a no brainer.
And if I am totally honest, it was an opportunity for me to show the powers that be, that with the right training, coaching, guidance, support and encouragement, given the chance, these jobseekers, so-called NIMYs were more
than capable of holding down a full-time meaningful job.
They just needed someone to reach out and to give them a helping hand.
This challenge excited me no end because I would explicitly be helping the long-term unemployed, ‘my type of people, to gain a skill for life that would help them to find employment, as recruitment consultants, which would
have been quite a remarkable achievement, even if I say so myself.
When I met with the Project Director, he said he didn’t think it was a good idea at all, did not even want to look at the training programme that I had worked night and day for three solid months to put together.
He went on to say, my remit was not to train anyone but to just focus my efforts on building the float for the carnival and drafting up plans for the march to the City of
London.
And for a while, I couldn’t understand why he was so adamant that I shouldn’t train anyone to become recruitment consultants.
And then the penny dropped.
The Government was paying this agency millions of pounds to bring their recruitment expertise to the job centre, and if I was to show how relatively straightforward it was for me to train the unemployed on exactly how the
private sector recruitment agencies operate.
Then this agency could have easily become surplus to requirement, and quite possibly have lost this multi-million-pound Government contract, as I would have been effectively given away this agencies secret sauce, so to
speak.
Now, disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer, I’m not saying that this was definitely the case, but that’s the feeling I had about the way this whole New Deal jobs programme had been
operating.
Obviously, what I was trying to promote at the job centre was ruffling a few feathers, as the following week I received a phone call from head office, telling me that my services were no longer required at the jobcentre and
they needed me back as a regional manager and pronto.
Now, this whole idea of training people who I felt had been unfairly disadvantage by a broken system stayed with me for many years, until the time when I was able to start my own recruitment training company with the goal of
