Hi ,
…Continuing from yesterday.
I later found out that the word ‘Nimy’ was an abbreviation for ‘Never In A Million Years’; In other words, never in a million years could these people ever find lasting employment.
They were viewed as unemployed and unemployable.
I must admit, the way that some of these job seekers were being treated, left a lot to be desired, and made me feel quite sad and despondent, as I felt there was a great deal more that could be done to help
them.
Many of these job seekers were effectively caught in a benefits trap, making it nigh impossible for them to find employment.
For example, how was a single parent mother going to find a job that would pay her enough money to cover the cost of childcare, plus Council Tax and Housing benefits; even just getting to and from work would have been a financial
challenge.
From what I could see, the powers that be were all benefiting in one way or another from the welfare to work jobs programme, which and while I strongly believed that the millions of pounds swashing around from the Government should have been directly
given to help secure training leading to proper jobs for these jobseekers.
The problem with these back to work government schemes, where people are placed with companies as paid interns for six months or so, is that invariably it would lead to the job seeker, at the end of the six months internship, reverting on to benefits,
with the clients that they had been working for as an intern benefiting from six months free labour.
However, what I felt would have been a far better strategy was for job seekers to be placed with companies to work as apprentices learning a skill or a trade with the Government subsidising their wages for twelve months, to give them sufficient time to
master a trade.
Would you agree with me, that money being invested in a meaningful apprentice scheme, where jobseekers gain practical work experience, on the job training and a guaranteed job at the end of the 12 months would have been far more
beneficial.
From what I could see, and this is just my personal view, I’m not looking to cast any aspersions here.
The Government was paying this recruitment agency and the other training providers millions of pounds to get jobseekers into some form of work-related activities, which more times than not, would still leave many unemployed at the end of the
programme.
Now, when job seekers were on these internship schemes, they would not be classed as unemployed, which would allow the Government to trumpet the New Deal programme as a resounding success that had helped tens of thousands of job seekers to find
work.
That’s the impression I was left with when I was involved in the so-called ‘New Deal’ project.
At the time there was a BBC news bulletin headed £69m New Deal failed 80% of the unemployed.
The report stated “a government scheme to help those aged 25 and over find work had an 80% failure rate, concluded a report by a key Assembly Scrutiny Committee.
Critics claim that participants failed to see the value in the programmes and that the programmes were not effective in equipping participants for work.
You Think!
Fewer than one in five participants in the New Deal 25+ scheme found employment afterwards.
The news report concluded by saying that the failure was particularly acute given the "relatively buoyant economy."
Don’t get me wrong, due to this recruitment agency’s involvement with the New Deal programme many job seekers did find employment, but a lot of these placements were in low paid unskilled jobs, on wages not much better than what they were getting on
benefits.
Yet, despite, all the problems and challenges, I felt I could make a difference, and I really and truly wanted to make a difference.
How?
I will reveal all in my next concluding episode…
Stay safe.
Warm regards
