It was been over three decades ago when the first Matrix film was released.
Yet, I can still vividly recall the hype that was associated with this movie
that very cleverly combined science fiction with a Hong Kong action film style.
More than that, the Matrix wasn’t just a brainless action movie but had
some very thought provoking themes that resembles business life today.
In the Matrix world, what humans take to be reality, is actually an artificial
virtual reality created by sentient machines, suspending humans in a dream
state, in order to harvest the humans as a source of energy for the machines.
Early in the movie, the character Morpheus offers Neo the choice on whether
he wants to learn the truth, which is a completely different reality.
“You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe
whatever you want to believe.
You take the red pill –you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the
rabbit-hole goes.”
This is a relevant situation for people today who are trying to improve their
lot in life.
All too often, we are taught from a very young age to go to school, get a
good education, land a great job and then retire on a good pension.
If only!
The reality is, you go to school then university create massive debts,
don’t
land a good job and then retire on a measly pension.
It is too easy to continue taking the “blue pill” and remain
blissfully ignorant
to very real problems.
The first key takeaway from the film is to realise you have been
taught
a myth, there is no such thing as retiring on a good pension, those type
of jobs are few and far between. For the company where they do exist.
People are in a constant battle to stop either the government or
large
corporations taking it away from them.
The truth in life is that life is not a dress rehearsal, and if
we are not
careful with how we choose to spend our time, then
one day we will awake from the unreality of the Matrix so to speak
and we won’t be able to do the things you always wanted to do.
As in The Matrix, if one dies in the state of virtual reality, one also
dies in physical reality. The realities are linked, and to some extent
are symbiotic.
Likewise, you may have goals in life and dreams of gaining real
financial freedom, but if you don’t take action to fulfil those desires
then your dreams die with you.
How sad to live a life of unfulfilled dreams.
Cemeteries are full of unfulfilled dreams... countless echoes of “could
have” and “should have”… countless books unwritten… countless songs
unsung.
Similarly, there are often linked in alternative “realities” between what is
perceived and what is reality.
Sometimes we have people attend our workshop presentation and
leave on a high as though they have invested in starting their agency
without actually doing so.
At the risk of losing you here, the human brain apparently releases the
chemical dopamine, a kind of natural messenger which is essential to
the normal functioning of the brain, and which tricks the brain into
experiencing the satisfaction of purchasing goods even though one
hasn’t.
It’s the same experience women get (or men for that matter) when
they go window shopping.
Coming back to the Matrix movie, we bend ourselves to unrealities.
In a memorable scene, Neo meets a boy who can bend spoons and
attempts to do it himself:
Boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That’s impossible. Instead…
only try to realise the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Boy: There is no
spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Boy: Then you’ll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.
The wisdom of The Matrix and in particular, the spoon boy, is that change
begins with ourselves.
In order to effect change, we need to go further and “bend ourselves” to
reality. Take ourselves out of our comfort zone and be prepared to take
risks.
Talking with people about starting a business and getting ahead in life
is totally like helping them to break free from the Matrix.
People are caught up in the 9-5 Matrix of life and its false premise.
Many refuse to see the real world around them and prefer the comfort
and “security” of a so called “stable” job.
From time to time, I feel like Morpheus. Trying to encourage people
towards a different world outside the Matrix.
My approach is to invite people along to a free workshop presentation,
fully demonstrate how they can earn a substantial income outside the
Matrix and then encourage them to take the red pill.
You see, I have been in the Blue Pill world myself for years, spending my
most precious and energetic years working to make someone else rich.
I was eventually given the “trigger” to look for another parallel reality,
but after that I had to spend a lot of time reading in order to get my brain
rewired towards
the real world and in order to adjust my mindset.
What is the Red Pill then?
In short, it is by starting your own business, you take matters into your own
hands and you essentially create your own future.
Is it easy?
Of course not. Nothing worth having is easy.
Neo had to fight against lethal machines risking his own life. You might
not have to fight machines, but you will definitely face obstacles and
challenges along the way.
The transition from Blue to Red Pill must be made gradually. Neo had to
educate himself and train hard in order to prepare for his battles, and
of course he had Morpheus to guide
him along the way.
The same applies today, to quote Morpheus: ‘There's a difference between
knowing the path and walking the path’.
This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the
blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever
you want to believe.
