Hi 

     I know, in my previous posts I said that I don’t do politics in any way shape or form, but sometime back I was reading the announcement about the Supreme Court’s ruling the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend Parliament was unlawful. 

     Now, I was always taught that there was a price to pay if you broke the law.

     In this court case eleven judges unanimously agreed that the Prime Minister had broken the law, but, for one reason or another he won’t face any consequences for misleading parliament or the Queen.

     In summing up of the case, Lady Hale said the decision to advise Her Majesty to prorogue Parliament was unlawful. 

     The ruling means "the prorogation was void and of no effect." It is as though it never happened.

     How can someone break the law, and be told, even though you have broken the law we are going to wipe the slate clean as though it never happened.

     Some years ago, I was driving to work, and a police car was tearing down the road behind me with his sirens on full blast.

     Now, I was at the lights that were red, and although he was behind me, to move forward would have put me in danger, so although I was of course anxious to get out of his way there was nowhere for me to go.

     Goodness me, the next thing I knew his bumper is nudging my bumper to move forward.

     I raised my arms as if to say, what do you expect me to do, pull out in front of oncoming traffic. 

     This officer was waving his fist at me, and then pulls down his window and starts bellowing out expletives and saying to me that if I didn’t move my bleep, bleep car, he would have me arrested, for obstructing an officer in the line of duty.

     I’m looking at this guy and thinking he can’t be all the ticket. So, I said to him ‘’do you really expect me to pull out in front of cars doing 60 miles per hour?’’

     Whilst I am turning round straining my neck through the car door window trying to say as politely as I possibly could, stop behind unreasonable; unbeknown to me the lights had changed to green, by the time I realised this, and put the car in gear to pull off, yes you’ve guessed it, the lights had turned back to red.

Yi,Yi,Yi!

     The ‘Sweeney’ officer behind me, is going ballistic, so I decided to put my hazard warning lights on and slowly edge my way forward through the red lights.

     The approaching cars seeing what was happening, stopped to let me and the police car through.

     He gave me a rude gesture and sped off.

     To add insult to injury, two weeks later, I received notification that I would have three points on my licence and would have to pay a fine for, yes, you’ve guessed it, driving through a red stop light.

Arghhhh!!!

     So, of course I appealed the case, and would you believe it lost and had to pay another £200.00 because I didn’t pay the original fine.

     I phoned up to ask if I could appeal again, and I was told yes but you would need to pay the fine first.

     I explained what happened to the person from the courts and he said, sorry Mr. Davis, but you broke the law.

     He went on, under no circumstances should you violate road traffic regulations regardless of the emergency vehicle behind you. 

     You should pull over when safe to do so, and in no circumstance cross a signal at danger. 

The law is the law.

     I thought, no this can’t be right, so I appealed again and lost, so now I was down even more money, I thought, a painful lesson learned, that the law is the law.

      I spoke to a good friend of mine who studied law and he said one of the first thing you are taught when you go to Court, is that it is ‘the Courts of law’ and not a ‘the Courts of justice’. It’s very rear that anyone gets real justice.

     Coming back to my story about the judge’s ruling, yes, the law is the law, but politicians and the wealthy have a different rule book.

     As in the Prime Minister’s case, the final verdict was that what he had done, even though it was illegal, it was not a criminal offence, but a breach of ‘public law.’ 

     How can someone break the law but it’s not a crime.

     It’s just like a woman can’t be a ‘little pregnant’, she’s either pregnant or she’s not.

     You’ve either broken the law or you haven’t.

     If I ever get a parking fine again, I think I will try that approach, by saying yes, I appreciate I broke the law, but can you make it void and of no effect. 

     Just wipe the slate clean as though it never happened. 

     Fat chance of me being let off the hook with that one.

     I promise, this will be the last time you hear me talk about politics, because this is not the reason for this newsletter.

     Now, with the judicial system there is a code of ethics that no one is above the law and in part the code reads

“I swear I will do right to all manner of people after the laws and usages of this realm, without fear or favour, affection or ill will. So, help me God.”

     Sadly, there is no such code when it comes to how you are paid for the work you do.

     Large corporations pay people pittance, so they end up on the bread line, and then the Government has to top up people’s pay with benefits, with your tax I might add, so that people can have a reasonable standard of living.
