Hi ,
Last year I was having a new phone system installed and it created no end of problems for me as it was day of a competition I was running and become were getting frustrated as they felt they were going to miss out on the offer.
In the middle of helping my team handle this minor crisis and trying to deal with people
contacting me via email, a customer decided to come to my office as he couldn’t get
through on the phone and he didn’t want to miss out on this offer.
As this man sat down, first thing I noticed was that he had been drinking, he reeked of rum.
I thought this is going to be interesting.
He then pulls
his chair up to almost touching distance of my chair and starts whispering
why he wanted to see me; in his words it was of a personal nature.
Now, nobody works harder than a drunk person trying to carefully whisper a secret,
and bearing in mind it was just me and
him in my office I couldn’t quite understand
why he was trying to whisper.
It reminded me of the old
saying ‘rum makes men do what they wouldn’t do when sober’.
Anyway, where was I, oh yes, he then said I’ve come to put my name down for this
funding offer but I have a few questions for you to answer before I part with my hard
earned money.
He then takes out a note pad with about 20 questions and starts firing questions at me.
- How do I know this is a genuine offer?
- What are you going to do to guarantee my success?
- Will it involve me working hard?
- Can you get someone to do the work for me, perhaps one of your staff?
- I want to get started first for free and then I will pay you from the money I make.
That’s as far as he got with the questions, before I politely interrupted him.
I said, if he did not have the money
to get started, then this offer is not for him. He then said okay let me put down £100.00 deposit and I will get the money in a few weeks’ time.
Not possible, I responded, as the funding will be all used up in a couple of days, let alone
a few weeks, and once it’s gone it’s gone.
He continued whispering loudly; I am entitled to receive this government funding as I am
on benefits.
I said this is not government funding, it is funding that my company has secured with the
sole purpose of helping people who cannot afford the full investment to get started.
So, you’re trying to tell me you’re some kind of p-h-i-l-a-n-t-h-r-o-p-i-s-t.
It took him about 10 attempts to get the word philanthropist out.
No far from it, I replied, my company was able to raise the finance from some
generous backers, so if anything, they are the philanthropist, not me.
After about half an hour of going around in circles, he decided he would go and borrow
the money from his sister and get on board as and when we have the next offer.
He then left the office through the wrong door.
Next week we
are moving to larger offices as we have grown in size, however, I have
been guaranteed by the telecoms company we are using that there will be no hiccups,
so, here’s hoping.
Drunk or sober, this is a one in a life time opportunity you should not pass up on.
Dedicated to your success in the Recruitment Agency Revolution.

P.S. Your posterity.- If you’re a doctor, plumber or bus
driver it’s hard to imagine you passing your career on to your loved ones. But if you own your own business, that’s something you can pass on to the next generation. And be proud of it, because you created it.
P.P.S. Job security. - Have you ever been laid off, downsized, or fired? If you have, you get this. With entrepreneurship the security lies in the fact you are your own boss. You run the show and don't have to worry about getting let go.
