On Monday, I received a phone call from someone who had
previously contacted my company to find out more about how to start his own home-based recruitment agency; here is how the call went: Caller: Just book me in! Me: No probs, but can I take your name? Caller: What do you want to know my name for? Just
book me in! Me: Yes, but I need to know your name to book you in! Caller: Look, you sent me an invite to a free workshop event, and you don't even know who I am? Me: Yes, but we send this invitation to hundreds of people who have expressed an interest in… Before I had a chance to finish my sentence, he interrupted me… Caller: I haven't finished talking. How dare you speak over me when I haven't finished talking! Who the hell do you think you are? My knowledge in the recruitment industry is far superior to anyone I know... And, I have forgotten more than you could ever know..., so it will probably be a waste of my time even to attend… So, do your, bleep, bleep job, and book me in! Me: Sorry, I won't be booking you in. As you are probably right, your knowledge is undoubtedly far superior, and I certainly don't want to waste
your time… So I won't be booking you in! Then, he slammed the phone down... Now, the truth be known, I would rather have invited Beelzebub than this man with no name… Well, maybe not Beelzebub, but you know what I mean… Recently, I was reading one of Dan Kennedy's books (If you haven't heard of him, he is a well-known marketing guru, well worth checking out.) And he was explaining the personality traits of people who are arrogant along with those who are ignorant… and this is what he concluded: To a degree, he said,
you can make allowances for arrogant people; as let's face it, they may have a wealth of knowledge in a field they are an expert in… You can also forgive someone who is ignorant, as they simply don't know what they don't know… However, someone who is arrogantly ignorant, well, that's a whole new ball game… Now, coming back to the man with no name, to add insult to injury, we have just updated our Eventbrite platform which will allow people to book in to attend our workshop event without calling in... And this chap has only registered to come next week… I assuming it's him as the person has put Mr X as his name and a dubious email address… Give me strength… Anyway, rant over… Just before I check out, can I ask you to do me a huge favour… As mentioned, I have just finished designing my new Eventbrite platform, and I would really appreciate any feedback, good or bad… Here's the link. But, please, please, please, can you avoid the temptation to sign up with the name 'Mr Nobody' 😶 I look forward to hearing from you. Warmest |
