Hi ,
Recently I read a report on how people’s voices change when they are in positions of authority.
They gave a great audio example of the difference in British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s voice when she was new to her job as Prime Minister verses a few years after holding the position.
It was amazing to hear the command in her voice after she felt confident in her authority and power.
This struck a chord with me on two levels. Firstly when I was thirteen I was on a TV programme called ‘Val meets
the VIP’ and the guest on that show was none other than Margaret Thatcher prior to becoming Prime Minister.
At the time she was minister of Education and I had raised the question whether or not she felt that as a woman would she would be able to compete with men in parliament (Dumb question I know – but I was only 13!) well to say she put me straight is an understatement!
But her voices at that time was nowhere near as powerful as when she was at the dispatch box thank goodness.
The second level reminded me of a new recruit named Richard who I had taken on when I was a manager working for Reed Employment at the London Bridge branch.
He had just arrived from New Zealand and although he had the makings of a good recruiter his voice made him come across a little timid and he just wasn’t having any success.
Then one day he approached me and ask if he could record one of my sales calls and I had no objection of course.
Now I thought he wanted the recording so that he could practice my technique, but no, he wanted to practice to sound
just like me, which was if you pardon the expression a little spooky.
Well two weeks later, when he
answered the phone everyone thought he was me, not a hint of a New Zealand accent what so ever!
On
one occasion, my wife had phoned up to have a go at me for not putting out the trash, and he let her go on for a bit and then said, sorry can I interrupt you a second, this is Richard, I take it you want to speak to your husband?
Not Good!
From that day on, very Friday morning when I came into the office my staff would take the micky asking me if I had put the rubbish out!
Coming back to Margaret Thatcher, the voice transformation of a successful entrepreneur is exactly the same as that of a political leader.
Great recruiters are completely confident in their presentations. They lead their candidates through the interview process with authority and decisiveness. Clients view these recruiters as trusted advisors, not just a recruiter looking for the next commission.
Studies show that the top salespeople outperform their average colleagues by at least 50%.
If you want to be a top recruiter (salesperson), you will need to learn to be 100% confident in your product, your sales process and yourself.
