I shared this tip during my weekly Zoom training sessions with my clients.
My client's friend, who works in sales, happened to be listening in.
She heard what I had to say about dealing with voicemails and has been using it ever since. In her words, it has been a game-changer…
So, I thought I would share it with you…
Not only is this the single most effective voicemail script I've ever found.
It's only 17 words long, so easy to remember…
Here's the exact script:
"Hi, this is [your name] calling in regards to [their competitor]. Give me a call back when you get a chance."
Example salesperson calling Aviva car Insurance:
"Hi, this is Peter. I'm calling about Direct Line car insurance. Please give me a call when you get a chance."
That's it. No explanation. No urgency. No value prop.
Why it works:
1. Creates instant curiosity (are you working with their competitor?)
2. Triggers competitive anxiety (what's happening with their competitor?)
3. Feels important but not salesy
4. Short enough that they listen to it all
Key points:
- Name their DIRECT competitor (someone they actually worry about)
- Keep your tone casual and matter-of-fact
-
Don't add anything else to the message
- Be ready with your actual pitch when they call back: "Yes, Direct Line is letting go half their sales team; I was wondering if you wanted to see their top performers who they are letting go of."
Side Note: Only use this if you have something valuable to say when they call
back.
This isn't a gimmick - it's an opener that gets you the conversation you need to have.
