Hi ,
At the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon, something extraordinary
happened in the Women’s Short Track Speed Skating 1500m final.
Chinese skater Yang Jingru didn’t just win gold — she won it through one of the smartest strategic plays the sport has ever seen.
Early in the race, instead of
skating conservatively like everyone else, Yang did the opposite. She sprinted ahead and lapped the entire field.
Then, having completed an extra lap, she calmly dropped back into the pack and skated at the rear.
The
result?
Total confusion.
Even the commentator and cameraman lost track of the fact that Yang was already one full lap ahead.
This wasn’t a mistake. It was a plan.
Coaching, Not Chance...
Short track races are normally slow in the early stages to conserve energy.
But Yang’s coach knew she had the ability — and the composure — to execute something different.
As she completed the extra lap, Yang subtly tapped her teammate to signal exactly where they stood in the race.
From that moment on, both skaters were executing a shared strategy.
Yang stayed relaxed at the back, while her teammate quietly moved forward through the pack.
When the bell rang for what appeared to be the final lap, the field went all in.
Two skaters desperately lunged for the finish line, convinced the race was ending.
It wasn’t.
Yang’s teammate powered through one more lap to secure silver, while Yang crossed later to take gold.
Gold and silver — not through speed alone, but through strategy, trust in
coaching, and flawless execution.
The Business Lesson
Most people start a business the way most athletes race:
- They copy what everyone else is
doing
- They focus on effort, not positioning
- They confuse activity with progress
But the most successful founders — like elite athletes — don’t rely on hard work alone.
They start with:
- A clear strategy
- The right guidance
- An understanding of timing and psychology
- A plan that puts them ahead before others even realise it
Yang could probably have won gold racing “normally.”
Instead, she followed her coach’s advice and secured two medals for her team.
That’s the difference strategy makes.
Why This Matters for 2026
If 2026 is the year you want to start your
business — especially something as competitive as a recruitment agency — the time to think strategically is now.
The strongest businesses don’t sprint blindly from the starting line.
They prepare, position themselves, and enter the race already
ahead.
A good start isn’t about speed.
It’s about clarity, coaching, and a smart plan from day one.
Because in
business, just like in sport, the craziest strategy — when guided by the right coach — often secures the gold.
