Hi ,
Some years ago, I was working as a Regional Manager for one of the UK’s leading high street recruitment agencies.
At the time, the agency won a Government contract to help the long-term unemployed in East London into sustained employment.
The Labour Government wanted to see if private sector recruitment methods could place more unemployed people into full-time
jobs.
I was invited to a meeting with the Managing Director, who said I was the “perfect fit” for the project.
Of course, it wasn’t because of my decades of experience, my winning multiple multi-million-pound
contracts for this agency or my awards as Regional Manager and Innovator of the Year…
…it was because I grew up in East London and was the only Black person on the senior management team.
Yi, y iyi…
Soon after, I found myself at a Hackney Jobcentre, tasked with bringing private sector recruitment skills to Jobcentre Plus.
On my first week, I was asked to organise a float for the Notting Hill carnival. Yes—a
float.
The idea was that this was to give a ‘high-impact’ learning experience for jobseekers – whatever that means!
Next, I was asked to organise a march from Hackney to the City of London, hoping
the media would inspire companies to offer jobs to unemployed youngsters marching by their premises.
At the time, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Most jobseekers had never held a full-time job, and many didn’t even
show up for interviews.
How could decorating a float or marching the streets of London change that?
It got worse. I overheard Job Centre Advisors referring to the long-term unemployed as “NIMYs”—Never In A Million
Years.
These were people considered unemployable.
And yet, I knew that many were motivated, capable, and eager to work.
The system, however, made it almost impossible for them to break free from the benefits trap.
Seeing this, I realised I could do something far more impactful.
I created my own training programme to turn unemployed individuals into skilled recruitment consultants.
My goal was simple—give people the skills, support, and confidence to earn a meaningful income and regain independence.
I submitted my programme to the MD, but the response was dismissive.
The agency didn’t want unemployed people trained—they wanted their secret methods protected, and my initiative threatened to expose the inefficiency of the system.
Within days, I was recalled to my role as Regional Manager.
Despite the setback, the idea of empowering ordinary people to succeed in recruitment stayed with me.
Years later, I turned that vision into reality by starting my own recruitment agency business.
My goal was to create a way for people from all backgrounds, ages and walks of life to launch their own home-based recruitment agencies.
This programme gives you the opportunity to claim your share of the UK’s £35 billion recruitment industry and build a business that works for you.
