When you start a business, it’s sad but true — you will attract haters.
Sometimes it’s colleagues at work who find out
about your plans to be your own boss and leave the rat race behind.
Goodness me, sometimes it’s members of your own family, people you expect support from, who suddenly become your harshest critics.
As the good book says: “A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.”
Not knowing how to handle this can spiral you into doubt, stopping you from doing what you need to do to reach your goals.
Here’s my best advice: translate hate into preference.
That’s all hate really is — someone
telling you that you don’t match their preferences.
It exposes their lack of ambition, their comfort with mediocrity, and their fear of chasing something bigger.
Watch how it works:
- “You work too much” = “I prefer people who stick to the safe
9–5 instead of building something of their own.”
- “You’re never satisfied” = “I prefer staying comfortable instead of taking bold risks to grow.”
- “You should be grateful you have a job” = “I prefer staying safe instead of chasing freedom and building my own path.”
- “You are too ambitious” = “I
prefer settling for comfort instead of aiming higher and creating impact.”
- “Money is not everything” = “Don’t be greedy or too focused on profit.”
The last one is probably the most common. My response is to quote the business entrepreneur Zig Ziglar who once said:
“Money is not everything, but it ranks right up there with oxygen.”
The Truth About Hate
Once you see this pattern, hate loses its power.
- Some people will hate you for doing stuff.
- Others will hate
you for not doing stuff.
- Some will hate you for being yourself.
- Others will hate you for not being yourself enough.
The math is simple: hatred is a fixed cost of success.
You’re going
to get it either way. So you might as well do you and be yourself. At least then, the hate is honest.
Starting your own business is never easy at the best of times with or without the haters.
