I’m currently recruiting for a Digital Marketing Executive, and some of these
candidates let themselves down by not checking their CVs before sending them off.
Several CVs arrived by post, with no contact details whatsoever — no phone number, no email address. One candidate proudly described
himself as a “hard worker who has never been caught stealing office supplies. And then added that he would prefer “not to give” his reason for leaving. Yikes. In my book, I have a section to CV
errors that are unintentionally hilarious. Here are a few favourites: - HOBBIES – “Space Travel.”
- MARITAL STATUS: - “Celibate.”
- OBJECTIVE: “One of the main things for me is, as the movie ‘Jerry
McGuire’ puts it, ‘Show me the money!'”
- EMAIL ADDRESS – i-one-hotmale@hotmail.com and another one homeboy@hotmail.com.
- Reason for leaving: “I thought the world was coming to an end.”
- Let’s meet, so you can
‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over my experience.”
- Qualifications: “I have guts, drive, ambition and heart, which is probably more than a lot of the drones that you have working for you.” (Good one, insult all of this employer’s staff; that’s going to get you the interview. I don’t think so.)
- A woman who sent her CV and
cover letter without deleting someone else’s editing, including such comments as “I don’t think you want to say this about yourself here.” (I would have loved to have seen what she had written.)
- And finally, another candidate put reason for leaving – “After receiving advice from several different angels, I have decided to pursue a new line of work.” Hmmm.
During my time as a Regional Manager at Reed, the company motto was: “Right first time, every time.” If there was even one typo found on a candidate's CV, it would go straight straight in the bin. The Chairman used to say: “If someone can’t double-check a CV that affects their future, how diligent will they be working for my company Reed?” With this in mind, let me ask you how are your plans for the future going?
